Finding Your Second Skin: A Guide to Fit

A bra should feel like nothing and hold like everything. Our fit philosophy, from band tension to strap geometry, explained in plain terms.

Most women are wearing the wrong size — not because they measured incorrectly, but because sizing was never designed around real, moving bodies. At VELRA, fit is not a number on a label. It is a relationship between five points of contact, and getting each one right changes everything.

Start with the band. It provides eighty percent of a bra's support, and it should sit level around your ribcage — parallel to the floor, never riding up at the back. You should be able to slide two fingers beneath it, no more. If your band creeps upward through the day, it is too loose; if it leaves deep marks, it is too tight. The band is the foundation. Everything else is adjustment.

The cups should contain, not compress. Breast tissue should sit fully inside the cup with no spillage at the neckline and no gaping at the edge. A gaping cup is not a sign to size down the band — it is usually a sign the cup shape, not the cup size, is wrong for you. This is why each VELRA line has a distinct cup architecture.

Straps are fine-tuning, not load-bearing. If your straps are doing the work of the band, they will dig, slide, and ache by evening. Adjusted correctly, a strap should rest on the shoulder with almost no tension — present, but nearly unfelt. Our strap geometry is cut on a slight inward angle, following the natural slope of the shoulder so it stays put without gripping.

Then there is the test that matters most: the living test. Raise your arms. Twist. Sit. Reach. A true second skin moves with you through all of it without a single adjustment. If you think about your bra at any point in the day, something in the fit has failed — and something can be fixed.

Our concierge team offers personal fit guidance for every style, because the right bra is not found in a chart. It is found in conversation, in honest answers about how you live in your clothes. Write to us. A second skin should feel like nothing — and hold like everything.
